Big
Sur artist Carolyn Mary Kleefeld is a philosopher and evolutionary thinker
whose innovative visual art and writing have been used for over twenty
years in the fields of human consciousness and creativity.
Born in England, Ms. Kleefled grew up in Southern California and
studied art and psychology at UCLA. In her art, Ms. Kleefeld expresses
both the vibrancy of the external world and the inner dimensions and
emotional tones of the poet. Her art is in the collections of Ted Turner,
Laura Huxley and the Downey Museum of Art, among others.
Over
the past two decades, Ms. Kleefeld has crated an extensive and diverse
body of visual art, ranging from her earlier large abstract expressionist
works to her multidimensional drawings and current figural oil paintings,
which evoke the spirit of Romanticism. She translates archetypal worlds
into bold explosions of color, sensuality, and spiritual attunement,
expressing in symbolic imagery the passions of the human heart and a
pantheistic affinity with nature. Ms. Kleefeld paints in a manner that
began with the Surrealist, suspending, conscious, pre-conceptions,
allowing the intuitive, subconscious realities to manifest. Her art has
been featured in galleries, museums, art magazines, and textbooks on art
and has been selected for juried exhibitions and awards nationwide.
Fueled
by a passion for creative expression and a lifelong fascination with
psychological and spiritual transformation, Ms. Kleefeld is the author of
three award-winning poetry books that explore these archetypal themes.
They have been used as texts in university classes and have been
translated into Braille by the Library of Congress. Her most recent book, The
Alchemy of Possibility: Reinventing Your Personal Mythology,
combines her visual art, philosophical prose and poetry. An interview with
Ms. Kleefeld was included in the anthology Mavericks
of the Mind: Conversations for the New Millennium along with
Alan Ginsberg, Timothy Leary, and other innovative thinkers of our time. Kissing
Darkness: Love Poems and Art written in collaboration with
David Wayne Dunn, is being published by White Cloud Press and should be
available in November, 2002.
Ms.
Kleefeld has traveled extensively throughout the world. She is on the
Executive Director’s Leadership Council of Amnesty International and is
on the Board of Directors of Laura Huxley’s “Children: Our Ultimate
Investment”, The Henry Miller Library and Bridging Heaven and Earth,
among others.
Through
her expression of universal feelings in an exquisite, vibrant and
evocative way, Ms. Kleefeld inspires others to explore their own creative
potential. As Ms. Kleefeld says, “Art is love in creation.”
