My
initiation began twenty years ago when I moved from snow country to Big
Sur landslide country. Being
trapped between two major landslides for six months created the isolation
I needed to paint the wild side of the Big Sur experience. Fire,
torrential rains, mudslides, and high winds tempered my soul
Living
where the majesty of the mountains fall into the sea one cannot help but
fantasize soaring over the ridges with the red-tail hawks.
My brush has been my wings and color the wind.
I respond to the primal rhythm and movement of Big Sur, talking to
her with every brush stroke. I
drink in her sacredness as I paint the canvas, breathing her breath
Wanting so much to honor her, I offer my paintings as a song of reverence
and joy.
For
the past ten years I have been teaching “plein aire” painting classes,
venturing out into the Big Sur landscape with kindred spirits. My hope is
that by sharing our Big Sur painting experience, my students and I will
open hears to the understanding of the sacredness of the land, along with
an expanded awareness of the need to honor and take care of her. I
continue to paint under the enchanted spell of the Great Mother.
